Q. What are the membership fees ?

A. Currently the fees are $2000 for the season. We do not charge this for start-up new players for their first season and will vary this fee for any regular/student player.

Q. How many horses do I need to start playing ?

A. Zero. The clubs members have horses available for prospective members to use to get a feel for the game. Generally the first year of polo a horse and equipment is not expected , its not realistic for someone to come out with a Polo horse and all the equipment and then try it out. The trend seems to be to get some assistance from existing members for a reasonable period of time and then purchase 1 horse and the basic equipment required to play at a beginner level.

Q. What sort of costs can be expected?

A. Probably easier to answer if we separate into parts.

1) The Horse

A good polo horse will generally cost between 5000-15000 CDN. depending on its age and ability. 99% of horses in Polo are thoroughbreds which can be purchased initially for around $1000 from an auction/ race track, unfortunately its next to impossible to start playing Polo at the same time as your horse (your first Polo horse needs to help you get started and a good one will ). You can expect to pay around $7500 for a good starter horse (age +10, really quiet).

2) Keeping the horse

Now that you own your horse you will have to start feeding it and keep it sheltered, etc. This can vary depending on individual circumstances, if you live on an acreage or farm you can probably keep the horse at home and look after it yourself, however you will then need some means to get it to the field for games (truck/trailer). Some choose to keep the horses at the barn (Willow Ridge Stables) located near the Polo field. This costs approx $350/month, but they look after things and you are right at the field.

Farrier services are usually required 2 times during the summer which costs approx $200 for the season and vet bills can vary widely but generally a healthy horse will only require annual vaccinations which will cost approx $50.

3) Polo

The annual fees are $2000 for seasoned players, the basic equipment requirements are a helmet $200, boots $500, mallet $100, knee pads $200, polo saddle $800, misc tack $400.
